Amalfi Coast - 8 Day Self Guided Walk

8 days Ravello to Positano

Walk from peaceful Ravello to the elegant resort of Positano, Appreciate outstanding coastal scenery on foot, Take ancient paths and stairways linking villages and farms, Hike the wild Lattari mountains high above the sea

The Amalfi Coast is renowned as one of the most beautiful places in Italy. It is a popular tourist destination both with the Neapolitans and the rest of the world. But while the hordes stream onto the beaches along the coast in summer, few - if any - are to be found in the Lattari mountains above the coast. This walking trip travels into the heart of these mountains, into the Valle delle Ferriere, where the paths are usually only used by one or two locals with their donkeys. There is still a chance to get a taste of life along the Costiera though, by descending each afternoon to spend the night in a popular seaside resort.

Days 1-3Ravello to AmalfiWarm up with a day's walk from idyllic Ravello down to the pretty whitewashed fishing village of Atrani. Then embark on this Amalfi walking adventure, taking the high path that leads to the famous nature reserve of Valle delle Ferriere. Traverse the meadows, chestnut groves and waterfalls to the village of Pogerola. An ancient flight of stairs here descends to the famous coastal city of Amalfi.
Day 4Amalfi to Conca dei MariniSpend the morning exploring Amalfi, once a naval and sea trading base and now a popular resort. Follow the 1000 year old footpath, the Maestro dei Villaggi, through historic villages and past the monastery of Santa Rosa to Conca dei Marini. The Grotto della Smeraldo is here, a popular cave so-named because of its emerald-coloured floor.
Day 5Conca dei Marini to Vettica MaggioreA stepped footpath passes churches with panoramic views and leads into the spectacular Fjord of Furore, its clustered houses built into the rock. Gently descend via the Via dell'Amore into the green Praia Valley and the peaceful village of Vettica Maggiore. Set around its attractive church of Sant Gennaro, this fishing village is sure to delight.
Days 6-8Vettica Maggiore to PositanoClimb up the Via Croce to the monastery of San Domenico and stroll along the scenic 'footpath of the Gods', high along a ridge. Clamber down into colourful, charming Positano and visit the majolica dome of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. After spending the night in this sleepy town, maybe take a day trip along the paths to Santa Maria al Castello for final breathtaking views of the coast.
