Day 1In FlightYou will leave LAX for your flight to Beijing. The adventure begins! (meals on flight)
Day 2BeijingYou will arrive in Beijing. There you will be met by your guide and transferred to a hotel near the airport.
Day 3UlaanBaatarToday you will fly to UlaanBaatar. When you arrive at the airport of UlaanBaatar you guide will pick you up at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. On the way we will give you a brief orientation of the center of town (Sukhbaatar Square and the surrounding buildings. After you are settled, we will take you to the lunch and visit Nattinal History (which has some wonderful exhibits, especially concerning Chingiis Khan and the tribal costumes). B, L
Day 4UlaanBaatarMorning visit Gandan Monastery (80 foot tall statue of Buddha, practicing Tibetan Buddhist Lamas) Then we will visit Choijin Lama Temple Museum. After lunch visit the National History Museum (which has some wonderful exhibits, especially concerning Chingiis Khan and the tribal costumes). B, L
Day 5UlaanBaatarToday you will be driven on a 2 hour drive to Terelj. This short ride on good road nevertheless displays three distinct landscapes as well as offers many interesting sites. You will stop at Giant Turtle Rock and the Dinosaur Ger Campground, which features lifesize statues of dinosaurs for some enjoyable photo opportunities. You will arrive at the hotel or ger camp to enjoy the lovely natural setting. If you like you can ride horses for a little or just walk around the area. Then you will return to UlaanBaatar. B,L,D
Day 6DalanzadgadToday you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to the South Gobi. You will arrive at the ger camp. Once settled in the camp we will take you on a tour of the area including Yol Am. This incredibly beautiful valley features one of the anomalies of nature found in Mongolia-here in the midst of the Gobi Desert is a glacier coming out of the mouth of a cave that is still frozen even throughout the summer. Day 7DalanzadgadFull day tour, including the Flaming Cliffs (where dinosaur fossils were discovered in Mongolia), a camel herder and see the large dunes and varied countryside sites. If there is time we can take a brief tour of Dalanzadgad. B, L, D
Day 8UlaanBaatarEnjoy the ger campsite and the area. Fly back to UlaanBaatar and transfer to your hotel. On the way, you will visit the Chingiis Khan Campground on the way into Ulaanbaatar. This interesting Ger hotel has replicas of the old platform Gers, hero's totems, ancient weapons and costume. You may also have an opportunity to take a short horse-back ride and enjoy the area. The rest of the day is free. B, L
Day 9UlaanBaatarToday you will visit the Zanabazar Art Museum. Then we will take you to the Bogd Khan Summer and Winter Palace, which has many interesting sights, such as a ger covered in snow leapord pelts and an empress's dress with over 11,000 pearls strewn on it. If time permits go shopping at Gobi Cashmere Store and State Department Store. B, L
Day 10UlaanBaatarYou leave in the morning to go on a trek to Karakhorum, the ancient capital of Chinggis Khan. See the beautiful Mongolian Steppe (and the Shoestring Gobi patch). Visit Nomads along the way and enjoy Nomad hospitality. Arrive at the ger camp. Go to the 9th century stone tortoises. B, L, D Eat and sleep at ger camp.
Day 11KarakhorumYou start the day in Karakhorum. There is not much left of the ancient capital, except a few warrior's hero stones. However, the Erdene Zuu Monastery is an active Tibetan Buddhist Monastery, and contains interesting grounds, buildings and a surrounding wall, laced with tiny Stuppas. There is a good deal of Buddhist artwork and you can possibly view a Buddhist service. Then we drive back east and visit the the Hustai Natural Reserve (also called the "Dutch Horse Ranch" - this area is where the only originally wild breed of horses can be found). Sunset as this is the best chance to see the horses coming close to where we will be. We will spend the night there. B, L, D
Day 12KarakhorumAfter breakfast very early morning you will another chance to see the horses. After lunch we will drive back to UB and transfer to your hotel in Ulaanbaatar. B, L
Day 13On the trainTake a morning train to Beijing. The Trans-Mongolian Railway is a 30-hour train ride which passes the scrubby part of the Gobi Desert, some ruins in Inner Mongolia and the Great Wall at three places in China. There is a stop at the Mongolian-Chinese border for 2 hours as they change the wheels (due to the wider Russian-style tracks). The Soft Sleeper Regular room has 4 berths to a room. Day 14BeijingYou arrive in Beijing in the afternoon. Your guide will meet you at the train station and transfer you to your hotel. On the way, we will take you to Beihai Park, where Beijingers go to relax.
Day 15In FlightYou will be transferred to the airport for your flight home with a lifetime of memories.
